Sleep Masks & Blackout Tricks for Day Sleepers

After a night shift, you're trying to sleep at the exact moment the world is loudest and brightest. For years I treated day sleeping as something to endure; eventually I started treating it as an engineering problem — and engineering problems have solutions you can test.
How I tested
- One change at a time, two weeks each, so I knew what was actually working.
- Tracked: time to fall asleep, wake-ups, and total day-sleep hours.
- Real conditions: summer light, weekday noise, life happening outside.
Manta Sleep Mask

What I Love
- Adjustable memory-foam eye cups: they mold around the orbital bone for 100% blackout with zero pressure on the eyelids or lashes. Total darkness, and you can blink inside it — sounds trivial until you've worn flat masks for years.
- Stays on through a full day sleep: the first mask I've owned that was still in place at 4 PM.
- Modular Velcro fit that adjusts to any face shape, including side sleepers.
What could be better
- Premium price: $39–$48 for a sleep mask feels like a lot — until you calculate the cost of bad day sleep on your health and performance.
- Velcro strap can be loud when adjusting in a quiet room.
- Bulkier than flat masks: the molded cups don't fold flat. Keep a pouch in the bag.
My verdict
The single best-value sleep purchase I've made. If you buy one thing from this post, buy a contoured mask — the molded eye cups are the whole trick.
MZOO Contoured Sleep Mask

What I Love
- Excellent blackout for the price: 3D contoured cups at a fraction of the Manta's cost.
- Replace guilt-free: if you lose one or it wears out, it's $15.
What could be better
- Velcro can fail in 4–6 months: the adhesive weakens. Budget for a replacement or two per year.
- Wider side panels create some temple pressure for smaller faces.
My overall rating
The "try the concept" pick. If contoured masks change your sleep (and they will), decide later whether to upgrade to Manta.
NICETOWN 100% Blackout Curtains

What I Love
- The foundation everything else builds on: triple-weave fabric blocks light through the material almost completely. My room went from "dim" to "midnight."
- Thermal and noise-dampening: lawnmowers lose some of their power. The insulation keeps a summer bedroom cooler.
- Huge size and color range: 30+ colors, most standard window sizes covered.
- Holds up after washing.
What could be better
- Edge light leak is the #1 complaint: light doesn't come through the curtains — it comes around them. Buy them wider and longer than the window, and use a ceiling-mount or wraparound rod for true blackout.
- Heavy: you need sturdy rods. Tension rods won't hold these.
My overall rating
If the mask is the best value, NICETOWN curtains are the best foundation. Together they solve the light problem completely. The mask + curtains combo is the most important investment on this page.
The noise solution
A plain fan for white noise — cheaper than a white-noise machine and doubles as cooling. Steady broadband noise masks the irregular sounds (lawnmowers, delivery trucks) that actually wake you. Point it at a wall in winter.
What didn't make it
- A weighted eye pillow: lovely for twenty minutes, annoying by minute forty, on the floor by hour two.
- Phone-app soundscapes: because the phone needs to be in another room. That rule — phone out of the bedroom — cost nothing and outperformed every product on this page except the mask.
The full setup
NICETOWN blackout curtains (oversized), Manta mask (or MZOO to start), fan running, phone in the kitchen, sunglasses for the drive home. Costs less than one pair of premium sneakers. Your day sleep is worth engineering properly.
